Every figure on Property Atlas comes from one of four primary federal data sources, aggregated to the state
level in our gold serving surface (property_gold.state_risk_profile):
- FEMA National Risk Index (NRI) —
county-level composite risk scores, expected annual loss from 18 hazard types, social vulnerability, and community resilience.

- USFS Wildfire Risk to Communities — county-level wildfire risk to homes scores.
- FEMA BRIC / HMGP — Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program obligated dollars and project counts.
Grain & aggregation
The underlying FEMA NRI data is county-grain. We aggregate to the state level: NRI scores and wildfire risk are
simple averages across counties (not population-weighted); expected annual loss, storm damage, and mitigation dollars
are state totals. The nri_county_count field on each state record
shows how many counties contributed.
What is not in the data
- We show only fields that are populated in the source. Fields absent for a state are shown as "—" and never estimated.

avg_wildfire_risk_to_homesandavg_insurance_nonrenewal_ratecolumns are sparse in this dataset — some states will show "—" for those fields. - This is not a real-time feed. The data reflects the 2026 snapshot.
- Parcel-level, address-level, or current-conditions data is not available here — use the primary sources for that.
What this is not
Property Atlas is a reference catalog. It informs and compares aggregate hazard profiles across states; it does not label any place "safe" or "dangerous", recommend where to buy or not buy property, sell insurance, or give financial, legal, or safety advice. For actionable risk decisions — insurance, home purchase, emergency planning — consult the primary sources and qualified professionals.
